Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co. Ltd (TMD) recently
developed a 32-inch LCD panel in which the picture solution
was developed by Azotech. The LCD panel leverages on the OCB
(Optically Compensated Bend) and LTPS-TFT technology.
The OCB mode was
originally innovated by Matsushita Electric Industrial and
LTPS-TFT 1 technology was developed by Toshiba.
These two core technologies were then transferred to TMD,
their daughter company.
OCB mode uses the
pseudo-impulse driving method which inserts a black period
in-between two consecutive picture frames. This enables it
to achieve a better Moving Picture Response Time than PDP
and almost equivalent to CRT.
CRT
vs PDP
As PDP and LCD becoming more popular in the Consumer electronics
market, it has been noted that the moving picture quality
is inferior to that of a conventional CRT TV. One particular
complaint is that pictures on LCD TV are optically blurred
2.
For CRT, the driving
method is impulse driving which alternate light emission in
short periods with black period intermission until the next
emission. These black periods enable humans to see a very
clear moving picture.
As for
LCD, its driving method is Hold method which emits light for
the whole frame period continuously without any black period
intermission. The human eye will maintain the image memory
of the first picture even when the subsequent one appear,
hence, these two pictures are mixed and perceived as one blurred
picture.
1
LTPS-TFT stands for Low Temperature Polycrystalline Thin-Film
Transistor.
2 An optical blur
is observed by human eye when there is no black period insertion
between two frames of pictures.
